AVG touts Threat Labs beta initiative

AVG has introduced an online tool known as “Threat Labs” that allows users to help counter nefarious cyber-criminals by reporting and steering clear of malicious websites.

“Beta users will be able to find out information about [potentially dangerous] sites when a [specific] URL is typed into [the] Threat Labs search [box],” an AVG spokesperson told TG Daily.

“[Although the online utility] complements AVG Linkscanner, those not currently using the program can still benefit from visiting Threat Labs as it provides an instant and complete safety analysis of a website.

”[This includes] detection statistics, a detection timeline, an analysis of linked sites and a detection map.

According to the spokesperson, Threat Labs “augments” AVG’s existing free, downloadable anti-virus software, while enhancing the company’s unique “people powered protection” approach to security.

“Web threats are constantly evolving and it is our mission to provide

consumers with the resources they need to not be victims of Internet

crimes.

“[We expect our product suite] to create a global army of citizens, nearly 100 million strong, working together to thwart Internet crime.”

AVG’s Threat Labs is slated to officially launch in late September 2010.
