Rage Against The Machine Frontman Reveals New Album in the Works [Unplugging]

Huge week in music! Sit back, relax and join your friends at mxdwn.com for this week’s edition of Unplugging. This week features the late-breaking news that Rage Against the Machine are working on a new album.

Rage Against the Machine fans will be in high spirits this week as Zach de la Rocha, frontman of the band, has recently revealed that Rage Against the Machine is working on a new album due out next year. In an interview with Chilean site La Tercera, de la Rocha said that since the band’s 2007 reunion they have been a more cohesive, mature unit. He added that the group is working on a new album that may be released in summer 2011. If this album actually does happen, it will be RATM’s first release since 1999’s Battle of Los Angeles.

Damon Gough, better known as Badly Drawn Boy, had an on-stage breakdown Thursday night at Los Angeles’ legendary Troubadour that involved serious audience abuse and some trash talking on the venue itself. The trouble began right at the beginning of the set as Gough complained about the sound, claiming he would never play at the Troubadour again. He went on to yell at the audience, but then apologized for the things he had said and done. Follow the link below to watch Gough’s rant yourself.

Sad news this week as we learn that Captain Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, passed away Friday in his California home at the age of 69 as a result of complications stemming from multiple sclerosis, which he had been suffering from since the early 1990s.  Best known for his work with The Magic Band and Frank Zappa, Vliet was the experimental rock visionary behind the 1969 avant garde masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica—widely considered to be Beefheart’s best musical work.

Other news this week includes The Roots scoring a soundtrack to “Night Catches Us”, an indie film taking place in Philadelphia (their hometown) in the 1970s. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood has also been busy scoring soundtracks. Greenwood has recently helped compile a soundtrack by composing for the upcoming Japanese film, Norwegian Wood, set to release in Japan this week. Finally, the Big Four, consisting of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax will be playing in the UK for the first time at the 2011 Sonisphere Festival. The Big 4 will exclusively headline July 8, 2011 at Knebworth.
