2K Games and Digital Extremes confirm multiplayer BioShock 2

Chicago (IL) – 2K Games has teamed up with Digital Extremes to develop a “multiplayer experience” for BioShock 2.

“The fans asked for a multiplayer experience and we answered,” said 2K president Christoph Hartmann. “With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we’re holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand.”

According to 2K Games, BioShock 2 is designed to provide an immersive prequel experience that will expand the origins of the BioShock world. Set during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of plasmids and tonics in the underwater city.

2K Games also revealed a number of “key features” in BioShock 2, such as:  

  • Evolution of the genetically enhanced shooter – players accumulate experience points to access new weapons, plasmids and tonics. These items can be used to create hundreds of different combinations, allowing for the evolution of a truly unique character.
  • Experience Rapture – players explore Rapture and engage in combat in locations such as Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites.

BioShock 2 is slated for release in autumn 2009 and will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows-based PC’s.

The frst BioShock, set in an alternate 1960, features a plane crash survivor named Jack. The player, who explores the underwater city of Rapture, is forced to repel attacks by mutated beings and mechanical drones. The game, which incorporates elements typically found in role-playing and survival horror games, has been described as a “spiritual successor” to the popular System Shock series.
