This pico projector is for next-gen smartphones

STMicroelectronics and bTendo have developed what they describe as the “world’s smallest” focus-free embedded pico projector for next-gen smartphones and tablets.

Less than 2.5cm3 in volume and below 6mm high, the projector renders vivid color, and sharp images that exceed the resolution of current-gen pico devices.

So, how does it work?

Well, the embedded platform boasts two MEMS-based micro-mirror-actuation devices within the system’s optical engine, along with an advanced video-processing chip, low power consumption and integrated support for MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface).

According to bTendo CEO Dana Gross, the projector will allow users to display high-res movie clips and photos on just about any surface.

“Adding projection capabilities into mobile devices will enable users to easily share their media with others – any place, on any surface, at any time,” she said.

The jointly developed Pico Projector will be showcased next week at MWC 2011 in Barcelona, Spain.
