BAE Systems has developed a parallel hybrid propulsion system for medium and heavy duty trucks.
The two-part system – known as the HybriDrive green propulsion system – is designed for two types of vehicles.
The first part of the system is targeted at vehicles that make less frequent stops and operate at higher speeds like long distance delivery trucks.
The other application is for use on vehicles that operate at lower speeds and make frequent stops like buses in congestion cities.
So, how does it work?
The HybriDrive system boasts a single electric machine integrated between the engine and transmission that enhances propulsion via an optimized blending of internal combustion engine power and electric energy.
The result? Efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and reduced emissions.
Currently being used in over 3,000 transit busies in cities worldwide in places like New York and London, the system is being tested for widespread adoption in trucks.
According to BAE, the hybrid systems have thus far saved 10 million gallons of diesel fuel, while preventing the emission of 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
Currently in the final stages of developments, road trials are expected to begin in 2012.
