Cadillac ELR Saks Fifth Avenue priced at $76,000

The Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Catalog each year is often filled with expensive offerings designed to part the upper crust with a small portion of their wealth. One item in the 2013 catalog is a very spendy expression of the Cadillac ELR extended range electric vehicle, which in itself is a very pricey up market version of the Chevy Volt.

The Cadillac ELR, as we learned back in mid-October, prices for around $76,000 before green vehicle tax credits and associated rebates kick in. What’s being promoted through the Saks holiday catalog steps up significantly from that in cost, and will take a $89,500 bite out of your wallet for the ability to own one of the just 100 units.

The question that immediately jumps to the surface for us is “what do I get for my extra $13,500 apart from a sense of limited exclusivity?” Well…a unique “White Diamond” exterior paint, a choice of “Jet Black” or “Light Cashmere” interiors, an upgraded 240-volt charging station with professional installation and applicable permits and your own special “ELR Concierge Representative” who helps you with information on battery care, home charging, service scheduling and news and updates.

Is this enough to make you want to pay the premium for a vehicle some already consider overpriced when compared to the Volt? There’s no difference in the performance specifications, which as it currently stands is an electric only driving range of around 35 miles before the 1.4-l gas extender kicks in to support the electric drivetrain and 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

As you consider this, also note that even if you buy one of these to put under the Christmas tree for this year, it won’t actually show up in your drive way until March of next year.
