Sony eyes spring launch date for PlayStation Phone

Are you hoping that Sony will officially launch its enigmatic PlayStation Phone for the masses at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show next month or the Mobile World Congress in February?

Well, according to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper, you may have to wait until at least the spring of 2011 to get your hands on the device.

As TG Daily previously reported, the long-awaited PlayStation Phone is expected to combine the features of a PSP and smartphone into a single Android Gingerbread-powered handheld.

The next-gen phone – which closely resembles the PSPgo – may also boast a touch-screen interface along with conventional gaming buttons and analog sticks.

However, Sony gaming chief Kazuo Hira noted earlier this month that the electronics giant didn’t want to confuse its fan base with a poorly marketed hybrid mishmash.

“We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that and a PSP,” Hira told the New York Times.

“[As such], we have to come up with a message that users will understand. It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation’s strengths intact.” [[Playstation]]
