Google adds celebrity endorsements to search results

It’s always difficult to know what to buy without the help of reality TV stars. So Google is planning to help out its users by tipping them off when a celebrity’s endorsed a product they’re interested in.

When a user carries out a search, products carrying a celebrity endorsement will be flagged. Based on Adwords, the new feature positions the endorsements in the sponsored ads section at the top of search results.

It’s part of Google+, which already allows users to recommend a particular search result to their friends with the ‘+1’ button.

“Some advertisers use celebrity endorsement in their ads. This test extends the option of celebrity endorsement to online campaigns,” a Google spokesman told the Daily Telegraph.

“We’re always testing new ways to make advertising more compelling to our users and advertisers.”

The company says it will also make it easier for users to spot and avoid fake products.

So far, the company doesn’t seem to have signed up all that many celebrities – but it’s got the Kardashians, meaning that it’ll be easy to find out whether or not they endorse their own clothing line at Sears.

The new feature should be rolling out in the US soon, followed by the UK and other countries.
