4Chan founder talks "Canvas" at SXSW

4Chan founder Christopher Poole (aka Moot) plugged his new “Canvas” project this weekend at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.

The closed beta website currently offers members an in-browser editor that facilitates easy, anonymous posting (after a FB Connect login) of altered and shared images.

Future iterations of “Canvas” are expected to boast advanced editing and sharing of music and videos.

“Canvas in its current form represents just a kernel of our long-term vision for the site, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store,” Canvas staff explained in an official blog post.

During a keynote address at SXSW, Poole reiterated Canvas endeavored to create a unique online social culture that would be totally separate from 4Chan.

“We’re [definitely] not building 4chan 2.0,” he emphasized.

The new site is reportedly backed by a number of prominent venture capitalists, including Ron Conway, Andreessen Horowitz, SV Angel, Lerer Ventures, Founder Collective, Joshua Schachter, Chris Dixon and Caterina Fake.
