Despite a lot of competitors entering the space over the last couple years, the one who pioneered it is still the leader.
Samsung was the first major manufacturer to introduce a commercially available 3D TV in the US back in 2009. Of course, at that very early time it held a 100% share in the market.
But even though there is now a lot of competition and even different formats for 3D technology, Samsung still accounts for the majority of all 3D TVs sold in the country.
According to tracking firm NPD Group, 61% of all 3D TVs sold from May 22 to June 18 were made by Samsung. This includes all kinds of TVs – LED, plasma, active 3D, passive 3D, etc.
“Clearly consumers are voting with their wallets and choosing the TV that provides a superior 3D experience,” said Samsung Home Entertainment president John Revie in a statement.
Samsung’s dominance has come into question with the introduction of new, low-cost 3D technology from companies like LG and Vizio. However, those “passive 3D” TV sets are unable to provide the same kind of eye-popping experience as the active 3D used by Samsung and other manufacturers like Panasonic. Active 3D was specifically designed for home use because it is so amazing and better than what viewers experience in the theater.
Samsung hasn’t just been sitting idly by, though. It has worked to stay on top of the latest trends and has managed to substantially bring down the price of its 3D glasses.
Still up for debate is how much the 3D market actually matters and whether or not it’s a fad, but either way, it is Samsung that commands the industry right now.
