Is the Asus Transformer a phantom tablet?

Target has reportedly cancelled a number of Asus Eee Pad Transformer orders, just days after offering a $40 coupon that brought the total cost of the Android Honeycomb tablet down to $360 (plus tax and shipping).

Unsurprisingly, the company emailed their hapless Transformer customers with an official explanation, claiming the orders were axed because none of the usual suppliers had the tablet available.

As Nicole Scott of Netbook News notes, Target’s unceremonious cancellation “reinforces” rumors of massive Transformer shortages.

“We heard from a reliable source that Asus is only able to produce 10,000 units a month – but will be ramping up volumes to 300,000 after the component shortage evens out,” explained Scott.

“It seems the volumes in the rumor are being reinforced, [as] Target has cancelled orders of the Transformer tablet. [So it] looks like we’ll have to wait until volumes are able to increase mid June.”

Well, good luck finding one until then!

As TG Daily previously reported, both Best Buy and Amazon have the ethereal device listed as either sold out or on backorder.

Now, usually we’d associate such a dynamic scenario with a product that has been frantically flying off the shelves and making headlines. But that’s certainly not the case with the phantom Eee Pad – at least in the United States.
