How Does the Dual Sim of the iPhone Xs and Xr Work?

One of the most interesting novelties of the new iPhone XS, XS Max and XR is the double SIM, but it is not a conventional dual SIM, Apple has included in their new iPhone an eSIM that will accompany the SIM that we all know.

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile data plan of your operator without having to use a physical nano-SIM. It is one more step to get rid, at last, of traditional cards.

How the eSIM works on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR

The first thing we need, apart from the new iPhone, is a compatible operator. It is Spain at the moment; Vodafone is the only one that offers it on the iPhone. On the Apple website, all compatible operators can be consulted.

This means that if your personal or work phone is Vodafone, you can use it at the same time as another with traditional SIM.

Now we must follow some steps to configure the eSIM:

  • Go to Settings> Mobile data.
  • Click Add mobile data plan.
  • Use the iPhone to scan the QR code provided by the mobile operator.

You can store more than one eSIM on the iPhone, but do not use more than one at the same time. If you want to change from eSIM you must go to Settings> Mobile data> Data plans and then click on the plan you want to use. These different plans can be named to avoid confusion.

But, what SIM is the main one and what is the secondary one? You can also choose your default number and what SIM to use for the data:

Use Main as the default line: if you select this option, the main SIM will be used by default for voice calls, SMS, data, iMessage and FaceTime. The secondary will be available only for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary as the default line: if you select this option, the secondary SIM will be used for voice calls, SMS, data, iMessage and FaceTime. The main one will be available only for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary only for mobile data: you can select this option, for example, if you travel outside the country and want to keep the main one for voice calls, SMS, iMessage and FaceTime and use secondary for mobile data.

The iPhone will remember the number with which you have called each contact that you can also choose at any time before the call or by editing the contact itself to always call from the same number.

Before starting a call or sending an SMS you can also choose the number from which you send it. Also from the control center we can see the coverage at all times of the two operators.

The eSIM are the future and in trips to foreign countries can be a very simple solution since we can hire a data plan and call directly from the iPhone. Hopefully it will spread quickly and soon more operators will arrive.
