HP is fighting back against the Apple iPad with more information about its Slate device, and it doesn’t agree with the old adage that if you can’t say somtihng nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all.
It’s released a video demo showing off the new device. And while the demo lacks Steve Jobs in a smart suit, it does look awfully similar in other ways to Apple’s Oscars ad.
HP really is being a bit sneery about the iPad, it has to be said.
“With this Slate product, you’re getting a full web browsing experience in the palm of your hand. No watered-down internet, no sacrifices,” says Phil McKinney, vice president and chief technology officer for HP’s personal system group.
And thre’s a second video demonstrating how the thing has full Adobe support – yah boo sucks, Apple.
It shows Adobe’s Alan Tam with Air and Flash in action on the device, with video playback from MTV.com, a Spongebob Squarepants game, photo editing at Photshop.com and reading the digital version of the New York Times. Tam says that three-quarters of all websites use Flash, rising to 85 percnt of the top 100 sites, and who are we to argue?
It all looks pretty effective: indeed, a couple of reports have suggested that the Slate accelerates Flash in hardware.
The videos show the Slate will come with Windows 7, a good-sized touch-screen, gesture interface, zooming and rotating.
There’s still no word on price or availability, except to say that it will be out some time this year.
