MediaTek – which only recently announced an 8-core ARM Cortex-A7 chip – has debuted a quad-core SoC dubbed the MT8135.
The processor is equipped with two ARM Cortex-A15 cores and two lower-power ARM Cortex-A7 components neatly arranged in a big.LITTLE configuration.
Key specs include Imagination PowerVR G6200 graphics, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio and Miracast wireless display technology.
As previously discussed on TG Daily, the A15 cores are used for tasks that require a nice amount of horsepower, while the Coretex-A7 cores are utilized for routine tasks which don’t demand a huge amount of “oomph.” This arrangement allows devs to design mobile devices that offer users more extended battery life.
Although MediaTek’s ARM big.LITTLE tech can also be found in Samsung’s Exynos 5 chips, Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes MediaTek typically offers chips to undercut the competition with its low prices.
“So it’s likely we’ll see the MT8135 show up in relatively inexpensive phones and tablets,” he explained.
“It’s [also] likely that the latest chips from Samsung, Nvidia, and Qualcomm will continue to outperform MediaTek processors, but with its first big.LITTLE chips feature Cortex-A15 power as well as the upcoming 8-core chip, MediaTek is doing its best to pull away from other Chinese chip makers, such as Allwinner and Rockchip.”
