Video: The $70 Mele A1000 Android/Ubuntu box

The $70 Mele A1000 Android box has certainly been generating a lot of attention within the mobile dev and modding community.

And why not? As Liliputing’s Brad Linder points out, the box is being (successfully) positioned as an affordable media device capable of running Google’s popular OS.

Once plugged into a display, the Mele A1000 can be used to stream video or run apps. The device also boasts an SD card slot and USB ports for external storage.

And yes, the SD card can be used to boot an OS other than Android, which is why devs and modders are quite pleased with the cheap ARM-powered computer.

In the video above, you can see that one modder managed to load a full-fledged version of Ubuntu Linux on his Mele box, which may be a little slow, but still somewhat usable.

Additional Mele A1000 specs include Mali 400 graphics, 1 GHz Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of storage and and 802.11b/g/n WiFi.
