Google terminates Android root app

Google has unceremoniously removed an “Easy Root” application from its Android marketplace.

The program – which was coded by Unstable Apps – allows Droid, Droid X and Milestone owners to root their Froyo-powered phones with a single touch of a button.

Although the root utility is no longer available in Google’s official Android Market, it can be downloaded from the developer’s official website here.

Meanwhile, Easy Root’s developer told Android Central he was “surprised” that the app had been pulled.

“I wrote Easy Root for a single purpose, to make it as easy as possible for people to fully use the hardware they had paid for. I am sure that like many others I choose the Android platform for its commitment to openness and freedom,” explained Nathan.

“Now, having said that, I also understand that Google finds themselves between a rock and a hard place. While I am sure they want openness and freedom, they also have to protect users to a certain degree. An application that can root your phone can of course do a lot of other things too.”

Nathan added that he would try his best and convince Google to allow the Easy Root app back in the Market.

“[But] if an agreement can’t be made, don’t worry, [there is] a version that doesn’t require the Market at all.”
