Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has announced that his company is working with Google to design a tablet computer.
“Tablets are part of the next big wave of opportunities,” McAdam told the Wall Street Journal.
“We’re looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience,” he said.
Verizon spokesperson Marquett Smith confirmed that the tablet will run on Google’s Android operating system, but declined to offer Bloomberg any additional details.
However, IDC analyst Al Hilwa told Bloomberg that “everyone is going to have” a device to compete against Apple’s iPad.
“Apple created that market, legitimized it. Everybody has seen that this is going to be huge,” said Hilwa.
“Obviously, the carriers want to get in on this gig. It’s going to be very competitive…[but] probably [will] take a year to two years for them to get to the same functionality as the iPad.”
