Gold-plated Xoom is the ultimate, ultimate tablet

If you’re going to get a Motorola Xoom, the most expensive multimedia tablet to date, you may as well go all the way. The company has unveiled a version of the device in pure gold, but you can’t buy it, you have to win it.

The Xoom is expensive. No question about it. So winning one might just be the best way to add it to your gadget collection.

It’s taking place on Twitter. Simply re-tweet the contest details from Motorola’s Twitter account and you’ll be entered in for the chance to win it.

When Motorola unveiled the $800 price tag of the Xoom, many consumers – and analysts – balked. In fact, we’re still kind of balking. That’s more expensive than an iPad or Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, both of which are already out of reach for many consumers.

Android is supposed to be the cheap, affordable alternative to the expensive operating systems, so the Xoom seems counter-intuitive.

Nevertheless, it has a lot of eyes on it because it will be the first to run Android version 3.0, also known as Honeycomb, and could redefine the still-nascent “multimedia tablet” market.

If you don’t win the gold Xoom, don’t worry – there’s still another way to get one. Of course, you have to be nominated for an Oscar. Motorola is giving away the gold tablets to everyone with an Academy Award nomination.
