$240 Onda Android tablet has a retina display

The Android-powered Onda V972 is a $240 9.7-inch tablet with a retina display.

The tricked-out device – which weighs about 1.4 pounds – features a number of sweet specs aside from the display, including an AllWinner A31 quad-core A7 processor paired with an 8 core Power VR SGX544MP2 GPU.

The tablet is also equipped with 2GB (of system) RAM, 16GB Flash storage, a 5.0MP rear camera with Auto Focus, 2.0MP front camera, WiFi, an 8-10 hour battery, one USB 3.0 port and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (upgradable to 4.2).

According to GizmoChina, the Power VR GPU paired with the AllWinner A31 offers the twice of performance of Tegra 3 and 0.9 the performance of the GPU in Apple’s new iPAD.

As the folks at CNX-Software point out, the Onda V972has cut some corner to keep the price low (such as omitting Bluetooth), yet it is still considered a high-end tablet competing with 10″ Tegra 3 devices, Google’s Nexus 10 and even Apple’s iPad, albeit to a certain extent.

The tablet is expected to be available from websites that sell electronic devices such as AliExpress sometime in the near future.
