HBO Go Android app is updated for Nexus 7

The first tablet to get Google’s official seal of approval has now been given the same stamp from HBO.

The premium cable network has launched the latest version of its on-demand HBO Go app, bringing with it support for the Nexus 7 tablet.

The service allows users to watch their favorite HBO shows on demand on devices ranging from tablets to TVs. The service also includes movies that have been licensed to HBO.

In total, that’s more than 1400 titles, and when it comes to HBO original programming like Game of Thrones, it’s the only place you’ll be able to legally stream that content.

Bringing that platform to the Nexus 7 means millions of users can now access the content on the go, and makes it a stronger Netflix rival.

Netflix has said repeatedly that it doesn’t see other streaming services like Hulu as its primary competitor. It instead looks at HBO as the main threat to its market share.

Netflix is becoming a de facto part of pretty much any entertainment device. It has already been confirmed for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console.

HBO Go can’t even begin to compete with that, especially since its breadth of content, by its very nature, is much more limited.

However, it is an enormous testament to HBO’s content creators that said limited content is enough to pose a threat to Netflix when it comes to where consumers want to spend their streaming resources.

In no time soon will we see HBO content making its way to Netflix, and as long as that is the case, consumers with a limited budget will be choosing between Netflix and HBO Go.
