Well, it was not quite the Gold of the Pope, but rather the former daily driver of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. The 99 Golf was auctioned off by a 21-year old civil servant Benjamin Halbe who had bought the car six months ago with about 45,000 miles on the odometer for about $12,000.
Just after Ratzinger was elected new Pope, Halbe decided to put the car up for auction. In the end, an online casino turned out to be the highest bidder with the stunning amount of about $244,800. According to eBay, there were several phone bidders who were willing to pay more than $260,000 for the almost-pope-mobile, but were not able to contact the auction process. (THG)
