IBM plans to announce today that it has built a new supercomputer it expects to be ranked among the fastest in the world.
The new machine, called the Watson Blue Gene system, was developed in a record two months and is installed at IBM’s Thomas Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. The 3,000 Watson researchers are already using the system’s number-crunching capabilities for a variety of scientific studies, including research in life sciences, materials sciences, quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics.
