Former Be CEO named chairman of PalmSource

Wolfgang Gruener

PalmSource, manufacturer of the Palm operating system, has named Jean-Louis Gassee Chairman of the Board. The 60-year old Gassee will follow Eric Benhamou, who announced in August his intent to resign. Gassee previously was chief executive officer of the now defunct operating system company Be, that went downhill as a result of betting its product strategy on the success of Internet Appliances and abandon its operating system BeOS.

Palm acquired Be in August 2001 for about $11 million in stock. Gassee as well as the remaining employees of the struggling OS maker were integrated into the development team of PalmOS. (THG)
