Joss Whedon twists the knife in Avengers 2

While a movie like The Avengers would never sweep the Academy Awards, the MTV Movie Awards is another story.

Yes, The Avengers made a big win for MTV’s Movie of the Year, while also clinching Best Villain and Best Fight.

As the L.A. Times reports, Avengers mastermind Joss Whedon joked, “What’s the opposite of humbled? We’re Biebered to be standing here.”

On the night of his great MTV Awards victory, Whedon also talked a bit about Avengers 2, and he said that writing the script for the next one is “enormous fun, followed by deep panic.” Then again, who could blame him? Making a sequel to the third biggest movie of all time has to be a daunting task.

Whedon told The Reporter the script is close to done, and he’s currently in “the deep panic stage” with it. “Actually I’ve gone past panic into a vague nether-stage.” As you may recall, Whedon had some apprehensions before returning to the Avengers franchise, and it took time before he finally came back.

“I sat down and thought about it,” he recalled. “‘Do I have a story to tell?’ Same thing I thought before the first one…It took me 40 minutes to realize not only did I have a story, but I was in love with it.” The next Avengers may also take a darker turn, or we should say that Whedon definitely hinted at one.

When the Reporter asked what The Avengers could be up against in part 2, he said, “Themselves. We’re all our own worst enemy.” Whedon had also previously said, “The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife.”

Ultimately Whedon told Total Film and IGN that working on the Avengers sequel is “a glorious challenge – it is a sequel, yes, but how can it be different?” We’ll know for sure on May 1, 2015, when Avengers 2 is in theaters everywhere. According to ifc.com, Avengers 2 will start shooting at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in London early next year.
