Amazing Spider-Man captures the box office

The Amazing Spider-Man – which garnered a slew of positive reviews – is doing quite well at the box office.

So maybe this reboot is indeed what’s done the trick in terms of reviving the franchise for future generations. In fact, the new incarnation will be the first in a trilogy, and down the road Spider-Man may be battling a brand new villain, courtesy of new Spider-Man director Marc Webb.

Well, turns out this is a joke. Webb told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s come up with a villain called “The Mime,” which considering so many people hate mimes could actually be a scary villain. (Someone once joked the scariest gang in The Warriors was the all mime gang you see in the opening credits). And of course, you don’t have to make up a villain because, “Spider-Man has a great rogues gallery,” Webb continues. “There’s a lot to choose from.”

Not to mention there’s a great opportunity for a great actor to reinvent one of Spider-Man’s previous big screen foes, like Doctor Octopus. (Think we’ve had enough Green Goblin for a while). If an actor could reinvent a Spidey villain in the same way Heath Ledger knocked The Joker out of the park in The Dark Knight, it will make the series even more fun down the road.

As noted above, Sony recently confirmed that The Amazing Spider-Man will be a trilogy, with screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek and Transformers) penning the next script for Spidey.

While we’ll thankfully never see The Mime in Spider-Man down the road, Collider quoted producer Ari Arad as saying, “There are so many ways to paint these villains, all of them,” and he hinted we may see the Sinister Six down the road, who Arad called “one of the great sagas in the Spider-Man universe. We have to be careful how many villains we can service, because a relationship with a villain has to be such that it’s a story on his own. We attempted to do multiple villains – you’ve been there – you just need screen time to do it.”

As Collider reminds us, the Sinister Six was like the Avengers of villains  led by Doc Ock, and also included Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Sandman. Green Goblin, Doctor Doom and the Lizard were invited to join the bad guy club, but they passed.

It would be pretty tough to juggle all those bad guys, but to shoot an anti-Avengers film which focuses on a gang of villains instead of a superhero team would definitely be an interesting change of pace.
