Avengers Age of Ultron is Huge…But Not the Hugest

It’s weird to think a movie that brought in $188 million opening weekend would be considered a bit of a let-down, but we at TG guess that’s how it is in the box office game, because Avengers Age of Ultron did predictably enormous business, but not a record.

As the Wrap and numerous other show biz sites tell us, Avengers Age of Ultron is the #2 biggest opening of all time, but it didn’t beat the opening weekend of the original Avengers, which made $207.4 opening weekend in 2012. Still, we’d like to think that $187.7 million is a very respectable number, and most movies would love to have an opening weekend that major.

Some pointed to the Mayweather, Pacquiao fight this weekend as one of the reasons the box office for Avengers fell a bit short, or maybe we are indeed reaching superhero critical mass already, who knows? The real test may be how well the movie holds in there, and how good word of mouth will be from the fans. (CinemaScore gave the movie an A rating.)

Still, we have to say, it’s a huge box office take, and it’s Marvel’s eleventh number one opening in a row, which sure ain’t chickenfeed. (The Hollywood Reporter also tells us its hit $627 million world-wide, again, not bad at all.)
