Will The Stand Be Four Movies?

If you’re a Stephen King fan like I am, the prospect of a big, multi-part movie adaptation of The Stand is an amazing proposition. It was supposed to be on the big screen back on the eighties with George Romero (Dawn of the Dead) directing, one of the great unmade movies we often hear about.

As much as The Stand should not be crammed into one movie, do we need four to tell the story? Collider tells us that Josh Boone, the director of The Fault in Our Stars, is the latest filmmaker who could potentially helm The Stand, and he envisions it as four films.

Boone told the site it was originally going to be a three-hour, single film, and it was budgeted at $87 million. Then Warner Brothers asked Boone, “Would you do it as multiple films?” As Boone said, “We’re going to do The Stand at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds.” (Matthew McConaughey is reportedly being pursued to play the main baddie, Randall Flagg.)

Boone predicted that the first movie could go into production early next year, but we can’t imagine it getting the greenlight, or having a cast and FX crew this early. Remember the mishegoss Stephen King went through trying to get three Dark Tower movies made at Universal, but Boone does have a three hour version he can always whip out if the studio starts making budget cuts.
