New Green Lantern footage released at WonderCon

An extended trailer for the new Green Lantern movie was shown at WonderCon, giving us all a much better look at what is being planned for Hal Jordan.

Last year an early trailer was released, which received a less than enthusiastic reaction from fans, due to its levity, and lack of spectacular action. Warner Bros. responded by claiming that the trailer seemed light on action only because many of the film’s special effects were not yet complete, and that the film itself would be more dramatic.

At WonderCon this weekend, Warner Bros. decided to back up that claim by releasing a new extended trailer, which shows significantly more action, and lots of special effects, including many of the other Lanterns. A truncated version of the footage was also released to the public on the Internet:

The clips still show some levity, as every comicbook story is light in places, but we also get to see the more serious side of Hal, as he takes on the responsibility of the defender of his sector.

We also get to see something of Parallax, as the trailer presents us with a researcher, who upon touching the wound on the dead Lantern’s shoulder becomes ‘infected’ with Parallax, and must be overcome.

The plot synopsis from the studio follows:

“In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps.

“A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

“Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity.

“With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.”
