What is Foursquare doing at SXSW?

Ah, South by Southwest in Austin. Dude, it’s like 9 days of music, film, tattoos, pierces, moshing and body surfing. And let us not forget the uber-cool hipster tech, coded by companies like Foursquare (or is that 4square?) which will be offering…

Well, frankly, we don’t know what the New York-based Foursquare is planning for SXSW in March because the social networking site isn’t telling – yet.

Yes, 4Square has checked in to SXSW, but is keeping mum about what it will actually be doing there.

Sure, Square reps will probably be speaking at a few choice keynotes and symposiums, but for now they are just saying stay tuned, as unspecified “plans” are currently in motion.

Oh, and 4Square also tweeted this er, weird stuff yesterday:

“OMFG! SXSW IS LESS THAN THREE WEEKS AWAY! NEW APP + NEW BADGES + PARTIES + CONCERT + MOAR FOURSQUARE. DETAILS COMING. OKTHXBAI.”

Now, as BusinessInsider’s Dan Frommer points out, the Square has to ensure that it remains the darling of sweaty South by Southwest and not be upstaged by the precocious Mark Zuckerberg and his Facebook Geek Crew.

I mean, seriously, imagine if everyone started checking in with Facebook Places this year?

That clearly wouldn’t do at all, so yeah, seems like Foursquare has got something big planned.

Anyway, we’ll keep you posted!
