The Great Gatsby gets a 3D adaptation

A theatrical release of one of the most classic novels of all time will be presented in high-tech 3D, as a symbol of just how ubiquitous the new video format has become.

Baz Luhrmann is heading up the project, in which Leonardo DiCaprio will take the role of central character Jay Gatsby. Tobe Maguire will also star in the flick, as Nick Carraway. Carey Mulligan will play Daisy Buchanan.

And even though the book is famously set in New York, the movie will be filmed in Australia. In other words, Luhrmann is taking the cheap way out.

Not many 3D movies have been shot in Australia, and for the particular area where filming will take place – New South Wales – it is the first.

While there is a fair amount of action, an old piece of literature like this isn’t exactly the kind of thing most people would expect to be in 3D.

Filming in 3D requires a whole lot of extra work, as there is more equipment involved, shots need to be set up with more attention to detail, and the slightest problem can force the director to shoot everything all over again.
