Sony claims iPhone is just "a phone"

San Francisco (CA) – Sony has rebuffed claims that Apple’s popular iPhone may negatively affect PSP-Go sales.

“At the end of the day, the iPhone is a phone,” Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America told CNBC. “At the end of the day, we’re a game system. If the iPhone gets you interested in gaming, that’s good for me, because it gives me a chance to sell you a PSP.”

Tretton also extolled the virtues of Sony’s motion sensor control and noted that it was quite difficult to “perceive” God of War 3 being played with a Wii controller. According to Treton, the device doesn’t “lend itself” to certain types of games.

Finally, Tretton insisted that Sony would not be pressured into lowering PS3 prices before the 2009 holiday season.

“I think everybody but us would love to see it given away for free,” said Treton. He added that cheapest wasn’t always the most successful, but rather, “what you get for your dollar.”
