OnLive on iPad lets you watch, not play, games

Video games have never really been considered a good “spectator sport,” but now OnLive, a revolutionary new cloud-based game service, aims to change that with a new iPad app.

You can’t quite actually play games with the new app, but you can “tune in” to other games being played by people on their computer or OnLive game console. It’s basically the first dedicated spectator app for gaming.

If just watching random people play games doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there are a few features thrown in to make it a bit more interesting. Like…

– See the latest “Brag Clip” videos of the most amazing moments among OnLive players

– Get unfettered access to watch the newest console games

– Chat with other spectators

– Become friends with fellow players

“Spectating of other players is by far the most popular OnLive activity after gameplay itself, and the convenience and mobility of iPad and Android tablets adds an incredible dimension to it,” said OnLive VP John Spinale in a statement.

In addition to being on the iPad App Store now, OnLive Viewer is also currently in beta form for Android, designed specifically for the full-sized Galaxy Tab tablet.

I think it’s awesome. When I’m on the train heading into or out of the city, I want something to keep me occupied but it’s usually too crowded to play anything, so now I can just watch other people having a good time. That sounds pathetic, but really, the OnLive Viewer app isn’t.
