NASA has debuted a free online video game that allows players to step into the role of an exploration team member in a futuristic 3D lunar settlement.
The self-sufficient outpost is located on the south pole of the moon and uses solar energy and regolith processing to power its life support systems.
However, plans for further expansion and exploration are put on hold when an unexpected meteorite impact cripples the life support capabilities of Moonbase Alpha.
With precious minutes ticking away, players are tasked with repairing and replacing equipment to restore oxygen production.
Available resources include an interactive command center, lunar rover, mobile robotic repair units and a fully-stocked equipment shed.
The game – which is currently available on Steam – features extensive single and multiplayer options, along with multiple paths for achieving the title’s primary objective.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that Moonbase Alpha is only a precursor to a future massively, multiplayer online project.
The upcoming game will reportedly feature content and missions that require players to gain and demonstrate basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge to succeed.
