Gran Turismo 5 is a sales juggernaut in UK

Gran Turismo 5 has dethroned Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top spot of the UK’s weekly game sales lists, as the insanely-long-time-developed game begins its run to actually becoming profitable.

The racing simulation game finally launched last week after years of hype and a couple very notable delays that left gamers wondering if it would ever actually come out.

Its launch became the sixth biggest in the history of the PS3 in the UK. That’s not exactly huge news, but it did finally topple over Black Ops, which had been the consistently highest-selling game on the platform since its release several weeks ago.

According to the sales data, from GfK Chart-Track, GT5’s opening week sales represent a 6% increase from that of Gran Turismo 4, a definite sign that interest in the franchise is still very high.

Gran Turismo 5 was first announced in 2005. Since then, the game has become somewhat lambasted for constantly being hyped and touted but never coming out. It was originally scheduled for release in 2009, then pushed back to 2010, and finally given a solid, confirmed release date in early November worldwide. That, too, was pushed back. But the game did finally come out last week in the US and UK.
