Can Kate Beckinsale replace Sharon Stone in Total Recall reboot?

Ah, Sharon Stone. From Total Recall to Basic Instinct, there was and still is only one Sharon.

But hey, I’m not in denial, because I realize nothing lasts forever, not even the 90s and everything cool that went along with it.

My favorite decade is over, with 90s era grunge music being played on classic rock stations (OMG), while classic movies like Total Recall are getting the royal reboot treatment.

I won’t dispute the fact that rebooting certain films and television shows often makes sense, especially for the ones which appear really, really dated, like, oh, say Space 1999.

But my problem with retooling classic films such as Total Recall is that the actors have achieved near archetypal status, making anyone else playing their roles a sad disappointment.

I said as much when discussing the possibility of Jessica Biel taking on the role of Melina, and the same obviously holds true for Kate Beckinsale reprising the role of Lori.

Sharon Stone did a (literally) kick-ass job of portraying the classic femme fatale, and I am loath to imagine another actress taking her place, especially Kate Beckinsale.

Interestingly enough, Beckinsale – who is currently shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn – is married to the film’s director, Len Wiseman. I suppose such a scenario isn’t uncommon in Hollywood, but still.

No, I don’t know who is qualified to replace Stone as Lori, but Beckinsale seems way too uptight, despite her famous lesbian pool scene in Laurel Canyon.

In short, Beckinsale just doesn’t fit the role of Lori.

Yeah, I’d probably go and see the movie anyways if she was cast – but that would be more to avoid feeling like a misanthropic, aging curmudgeon than anything else.

What do you think? Can Beckinsale replace Sharon Stone? If not, who can?
