Can Guillermo del Toro bring horror to video games?

Guillermo Del Toro’s definitely got a full plate of projects for years to come.

First up is the remake of the horror TV movie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark – which Del Toro produced – due for release on August 26.

Then there’s Del Toro’s next directing gig – Pacific Rim – pegged to hit theaters in 2013. Of course, Del Toro still hasn’t given up on his dream project, At the Mountains of Madness, the big screen adaptation of the HP Lovecraft story.

If it finally makes it to production, the adaption could be the most ambitious horror film in memory.

And speaking of ambitious initiatives, Del Toro also has a video game in the works called inSANE.

Del Toro told MTV’sMultiplayer blog that he’s been working on the game with THQ and Volition.

The title has been under construction for a year, and they have “two or three more years to go. I’m a huge gamer but going into constructing it, you have to be respectful of the medium. I’m learning a lot… My life is pretty much 24/7 work, but we’re giving it the proper attention.”

Del Toro also promises the creatures in the game are “obscenely fun and unique, and that the game is going to be “Lovecraftian” – both elements we know to expect from Guillermo’s work.

Several years back I wrote about horror and video games, a crossover that didn’t totally come together, but I thought it was interesting that games tried to be scary.

For example, John Carpenter worked on the game F.E.A.R., not to mention there was also a game adaptation of The Thing, while make-up master Tom Savini consulted on a City of the Dead title (which never came together), and at one point, Fangoria magazine even had a game column.

As Dave Callaham, the screenwriter of Doom the movie says, “If you were to turn out the lights and play Doom 3 on a large monitor and wear headphones, which I’ve done, it’s probably a lot scarier than most movies will ever be because you don’t have the comfort of people around you, the stereo speakers are right in your ears.

“I rented the game Manhunt a couple of years ago, and it bothered me to the point where I couldn’t play it anymore. The Resident Evil games, the Silent Hill games, it’s definitely some creepy sh*t!”
