Call of Duty: Blacks Ops topples $1 billion in sales

It’s only been out a few weeks but is already one of the best-selling video games of all time. The latest Call of Duty release has now apparently climbed into the eight-figure territory when it comes to sales revenue.

Blacks Ops has already added a bunch of sales records to its resume, including the biggest launch in the history of video games and various marks (e.g., first-week sales) that place it as the fastest-selling game as well. These metrics are solely based on US sales.

Publisher Activision couldn’t be happier, as it didn’t even expect the game to do as well as Modern Warfare 2. MW2 was the previous record-holder for both of the metrics mentioned above.

Black Ops has been faced with bugs and glitches that the developer is working to fix, but it has called into question the current state of the industry and whether or not more games are heading to store shelves with bugs.

Thanks to Internet connectivity, console games can now be patched after the fact. In a previous life, a game with as many glitches as Black Ops would have been labeled a lemon and face veritable death in the retail world.

But since Activision can push out updates to solve any issues that arise, players aren’t even giving it a second thought.

Nevertheless, it’s surely a huge milestone for the game today. It has become the fastest game to reach $1 billion in sales. The game came out on November 9. Meanwhile, Modern Warfare 2, which came out November 9, 2008, took until January of the following year to reach $1 billion. [[Call of Duty]]
