2014 Genre Movie Preview

2013 was a hell of a year for genre movies, and 2015 will be the big year of Star Wars and Avengers 2. But how about next year? Well, turns out there’s a lot of great genre stuff coming up as well.

Starting the year off on a scary note, the Latin flavored version of Paranormal Activity, The Marked Ones, comes out on January 3, and on January 10 comes the Spike Jonez sci-fi comedy Her, where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with the artificial intelligence voice of Scarlett Johansson. Then on January 17 comes the reinvention of Jack Ryan, Shadow Recruit, starring Chris Pine, who’s taking over from Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck.

In February, we have The LEGO Movie coming out on the 7th, and the reboot of RoboCop coming on February 12. On March 7 comes the sequel to 300, Rise of an Empire, and the documentary on Alejandro Jodoworski’s Dune, which never got made, but it would have been one of the most insane sci-fi flicks of the ‘70’s if it ever made it to the silver screen.

April 4 comes the next Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and on April 18 comes Transcendence, the sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp that was directed by Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer. On May 2 comes The Amazing Spider-Man 2, then Godzilla is coming on May 16, followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past on May 23, and Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West on May 30.

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction comes on June 27, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes follows on July 11. The next movie from the Wachiowskis, Jupiter Ascending, comes on July 25, and Guardians of the Galaxy is coming on August 1. Then comes the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on August 8, followed by the next Sin City movie, A Dame to Kill For, on August 22.

Resident Evil 6 is coming on September 12, then the next big genre event film is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar on November 7. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is due on November 21, and the last installment of The Hobbit, There and Back Again, is set for release on December 17.

So 2014 will clearly have lots of genre action for everyone, with a lot of cool offerings that vary from superheroes, sci-fi, the last installment of the Hobbit, the next to last installment of the Hunger Games, Bryan Singer’s return to the helm of X-Men, and much, much more.
