Does the world need a Jane Austen MMOG?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) dedicated to the world of Regency England.

Via Polygon, a Kickstarter campaign has just raised $109,563 to fund the creation of Ever, Jane, a massively multiplayer online game about Jane Austen.

Unlike other MMOGs this game will not involve wholesale genocide to rescue Mr Darcy and his 20,000 pounds inheritance.

According to the Kickstarter page in the world of Jane Austen, it is not about kill or be killed, but invite and be invited with gossip our weapon of choice. So imagine Grand Theft Auto and replaced the crime with parties and the prostitutes with English gentry. Rather than fights, you’re out to advance your status via social occasions and instead of an axe you have gossip.

Player stats like strength have been replaced with personality traits modelled after Jane Austen characters,  Marianne Dashwood prefers Happiness over Duty [shurely Call of Duty, ed].

So far, the developers have a working prototype available for download, but “no balls, dinner parties, or mini-games yet nor any ability to travel between villages”.
