The Ridiculousness of Machete Kills in Space

As much as I love B movies and grindhouse flicks, I always thought the whole Machete thing was pretty silly, and I’m glad Robert Rodriguez won’t be wasting his time on it anymore, because Machete Kills tanked at the box office. Or will Machete one day return?

There’s a new fake trailer, Machete Kills in Space, and it’s indeed pretty ridiculous, but I mean that in the kindest way possible. You may recall in 2007’s epic POS Grindhouse there were fake trailers for films such as Thanksgiving, directed by Eli Roth, and Don’t, directed by Edgar Wright. This clearly follows in that tradition, and at one point Roth was even toying with making a fake trailer movie called Trailer Trash.

As Vulture reminds us, Rodriguez did promise a Machete in Space movie several Comic-Cons ago, and this trailer comes complete with a grainy, 16 millimeter look, cheesy special effects, cameos from Michelle Rodriguez and Lady Gaga, intentionally bad stunt choreography, and a robot who’s supposed to be Justin Bieber getting blasted by the bladed one. The trailer also has a bogus X rating “For cigarette use, prolonged sexual content, pervasive language and space violence.”

With Machete Kills, Robert Rodriguez definitely overstuffed the turkey, so we’re not sure if there will be another movie down the road. Maybe the solution is to keep the installments as short as possible, like this trailer, because in the B movie world, the trailers and the posters were always far more amusing than the actual movies anyways.
