The World of Warcraft Movie Is Officially a Go

A movie based on World of Warcraft has been in the works for some time now, and now it’s official: The big-screen adaptation of WoW will roll next year with Duncan Jones (Source Code) directing.

This announcement was made at Comic Con, and as we previously reported on TG, this has been a long time coming. There hasn’t been a good video game movie to this day, and we hope that WoW will be the one that breaks the cold streak. As Variety tells us, a WoW movie has also been the passion project of Legendary Pictures, the studio that gave us the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, and next summer’s redo of Godzilla.

At one point, Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead) was going to direct, and the mind boggles at what insanity he could have come up with. Still, Duncan Jones is a good up and coming director in his own right, and this could be the project that finally puts him over the top and makes him a major Hollywood playa.

Several years back, the big screen version of Halo went bust at Universal because it just would have been way too expensive to make. (Neill Blomkamp, whose next movie Elysium comes out on August 9, was going to direct the Halo flick, but made District 9 instead.) We think WoW has the potential to be a major video game movie smash, so here’s hoping it delivers when it’s ready for release in 2015.
