The Avengers conquers all

We all knew this was going to happen, yet The Avengers came in even bigger than anyone could have predicted.

Before its release, the buzz, word of mouth, tracking and reviews were all pretty stellar, so it was clear the film was on track to make some serious bucks.

Still, Avengers did even better than initial box office reports indicated.

Indeed, the long-awaited superhero film is now officially categorized as having generated the biggest opening weekend in box office history with a staggering $207 million.

As Variety tells us, the original box office projections were $200.3 million, and it came in even better than anyone predicted, already generating approximately $654.8 million.

As you may recall, there was a lot of back and forth about whether Avengers was capable of beating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Well, perhaps not unsurprisingly, it did, and by a cool 23%. Remember, Potter made $169 million opening weekend.

What’s also given The Avengers a major edge is that it first opened overseas, raking in the big bucks before hitting theaters domestically.

But when it did, The Avengers broke records for the first Saturday and Sunday, making $69.5 million and $57 million respectively.

Another interesting box office tidbit? A Deadline reported confirms Avengers blew past the overseas box office totals of Captain America, Iron Man 1 and 2, and Thor in its first twelve days of release, all while passing up Captain America and Thor in the States and breaking the record for 110 IMAX screenings.

It also had the biggest midnight shows for a superhero flick and received an A+ from Cinema Score, as well as 94% positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes.
