The Avengers is officially a winner

The Avengers is currently the most anticipated movie of the year, perhaps even more so than The Hunger Games, Prometheus or Dark Knight Rising.

This means the movie should make a nice brinks truck full of money on opening weekend. Yes, the first reviews are in, and the verdict is The Avengers is indeed a winner.

Variety reports, “Marvel’s cinematic master plan for its comicbook all-stars pays off in extravagant fashion with The Avengers. Like a superior, state-of-the-art model built from reconstituted parts, Joss Whedon’s buoyant, witty and robustly entertaining superhero  smash-up is escapism of a sophisticated order.”

As for its box office prospects, Variety writes, “With fant-ticipation reaching Hulk pressure-cooker levels, Disney’s domestic and international returns will be nothing short of stratospheric, ancillary streams close to eternal.”

It’s interesting to note that Variety and The Hollywood Reporter don’t typically agree on reviews. So if one loves it, the other publication usually hates it, so it’s definitely good news to note that the Reporter loved The Avengers as well.

“Director Joss Whedon pulls off a stunning feat in bringing balance to this superhuman circus, engineered to charm the geek core and nonfans alike. Worldwide box-office returns will be, in a word, Marvelous.” The Avengers will also give viewers plenty of superhero bang for the buck, running at 142 minutes long.

As you may recall, Whedon had a bad time working on the original X-Men movie, where little of his work stayed in the finished film. So he must be very happy indeed that The Avengers is apparently going to really deliver at the box office on May 4.
