The return of Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown was Quentin Tarantino’s follow up to Pulp Fiction, and it wasn’t exactly well received when it hit theaters on Christmas day way back in 1997.

However, in recent years, more and more people have seen it on cable and realize it’s a terrific gem of a film that deserves a second look. Jackie Brown was actually an adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch, and Brown may now return in the big screen adaptation of the prequel to Punch, Switch.

Collider reports that John Hawkes, who is hot from the Sundance film in Surrogate, will have a role in Switch, along with Yasiin Bey, the rapper formerly known as Mos Def.

Switch takes place fifteen years before Rum Punch, and it’s reportedly going to start production in May.

Variety reports that Hawkes will play the younger version of Louis Gara, who Robert DeNiro played in Brown, and Def will take on the role of Ordell Robbie, who Samuel L. Jackson played in Brown. Hawkes has also starred in Winter’s Bone, Contagion, and Spielberg’s upcoming biopic of Lincoln.

Speaking of Tarantino, his latest film, Django Unchained is currently shooting in a familiar location, The  Melody Ranch in the Santa Clarita Valley where Deadwood was also filmed.

The L.A. Times saw Tarantino shoot a scene to Jim Croce’s “I Got a Name” playing through a loudspeaker, and Sergio Leone (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) also liked to shoot his spaghetti westerns to Ennio Morricone’s music, which was usually composed before shooting.

As Tarantino told the Times, “It’s a blast shooting here. Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It’s fantastic.”

Django, which stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, RZA and Don Johnson will come out, like Jackie Brown did back in ’97, on Christmas Day.
