Iron Sky trailer goes live

Blind Spot Pictures has released its trailer for Iron Sky, an upcoming science-fiction comedy film from the makers of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning.

So, what is the movie about? Well, towards the end of World War II, or so the story goes, Nazi scientists apparently made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity technology.

“From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ’45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right,” reads the official synopsis.

“Now it’s 2018, and it’s the time for the first American Moon landing since the 70′s. Meanwhile the Nazi invasion, that has been over 70 years in the making, is on its way, and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom. The three main characters of the story are Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), Klaus Adler (Götz Otto), and James Washington (Christopher Kirby).”

Yes, Tarrantino’s Inglourious Basterds does come to mind when watching the trailer, but this is an angle Quentin never would have chosen in his wildest dreams, even if he was dead sober.

Personally, I think I’ll try and make an effort to see the movie when it hits select theaters on April 4, 2012 – simply because it is probably what Basterds could have and should have been.

If anything, good science fiction comedies that don’t take themselves seriously are few and far between, so, yes, I’m actually quite looking forward to watching this one. And no, it obviously won’t be on the same level as Red Dwarf or Hitchhiker’s, but so what?

Iron Sky – shot in Red camera format – was directed by Timo Vuorensola, produced by Tero Kaukomaa and written by Johanna Sinisalo along with Michael Kalesniko. The movie was financed by
Energia Productions, Blind Spot Pictures, New Holland Pictures and 27 Films production companies.

It should be noted that Iron Sky is considered part of a new wave of films which are produced in collaboration (albeit to a certain extent) with an on-line community of film enthusiasts. Other films that fit this new category include The Cosmonaut, A Swarm of Angels and RiP!: A Remix Manifesto.
