New rumor suggests PS4, Xbox 720 at E3

The latest scuttlebutt about the Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 is sparking excitement that this year’s E3 could be the “biggest ever.”

That’s the way website Mcvuk.com described it in a recent article. The site claims to have heard from unspecified “third-party publishing sources” that Microsoft has told them the next iteration of the Xbox will be unveiled at the June event.

And even though Sony may not have originally intended to unveil the PS4 at E3, MCV is claiming the company does not want to be “left behind this time.”

The Xbox 360 was unveiled a year before the PS3, giving Microsoft a big head start when it came to building hype. Sony apparently doesn’t want to give its rival such an advantage in the next console cycle.

In addition to these rumored incredible announcements from Sony and Microsoft, this year’s E3 is also expected to be the true debut of Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U.

The Wii U was revealed at E3 2011 but only a few tech demos were on hand and most gamers were left scratching their heads, trying to figure out the actual hardware details.

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been around longer than the traditional console cycle, but that’s because the emergence of Internet connectivity allowed Sony and Microsoft to roll out new updates and keep their platforms fresh. Both have also dabbled in significant hardware redesigns.

But those moves can only go so far, and it looks like this may be the year when both companies admit that.
