Microsoft and PrimeSense have confirmed the latter company’s involvement in developing 3D-sensing technology for use in Project Natal.
“Xbox 360 Hardware Engineering teams developed the ‘Project Natal’ sensor based on the reference design to support the special requirements of [the system],” explained PrimeSense president Aviad Maizels.
“[Our] technology enables a paradigm shift in the way people interact with consumer electronic devices.”
However, Joystiq’s Justin McElroy noted that “just how much” Microsoft’s Natal relied on PrimeSense technology remained unclear.
“As you can see in the video, the company’s focus has been on gesture control for UI navigation, so it’s possible PrimeSense could just be supplying a way for users to interact with the Xbox Dashboard and Guide with motion commands.”
