Kosinski explains the Oblivion trailer

The director of the sci-fi thriller Oblivion explains each element of the full-length trailer.

Oblivion is about Jack, a caretaker for the drones that keep humanity alive in their cloud-cities. It’s 60 years after a great war with an extra-terrestrial race which was won by Earth, but which destroyed the surface of the planet in the process. Actions and intrigue ensue when Jack discovers that the surface is not uninhabited, as he was led to believe, and is further complicated when a mysterious woman awakens from amid the wreckage of a ship from the stars – who clearly knows more than she says about the strange condition of the planet and its inhabitants.

The first trailer went live a couple of weeks ago, and, as usual, left much unknown about the film and its plot. If you don’t mind a few spoilers, we’ve got this video of a 12 minute interview director with Joseph Kosinski and IGN discussing some of the visuals from the trailer, with the footage itself shown at modulated speed.

We honestly don’t learn that much more than we already knew about the plot, as the director is rather mum about any of the twists of reveals in the film, which is good, since it’s an original story, but it’s nice to hear it from him, even if both voices in the video have a few too many ‘uhm’s in their sentences. I’m assuming/hoping that the moments where he doesn’t seem to understand what we’re looking at is more his way of saying ‘no comment’ than him truly not understanding what’s going on in the film he directed.

Here’s the trailer without the IGN material:

and the official synopsis:

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth.  Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft.  Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

A tie-in graphic novel was under production when Disney was running the film, but nothing has been heard about that since the film changed hands, and it may no longer be part of the plan.

Oblivion, which stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, and Andrea Riseborough, is slated to hit IMAX theaters on April 12th, 2013 and all other theaters a week later.
