About that Play-Doh Movie…

We recently reported here on TG that a Play-Doh movie in the works to be made, news we’re sure made more than a few of you roll your eyes. Obviously with the success of the Lego Movie something like a Play-Doh movie would be inevitable, and maybe something like the Colorforms or Hungry Hungry Hippos will be next.

Attached to the Play Doh movie is Paul Feig, who directed Bridesmaids, and who will also helm the next Ghostbusters movie with an all female apparition team. As to why Feig is making a Play Doh movie, he told Collider, he was approached by Hasbro, and he had the same reaction most people would have. How do you make a Play-Doh movie?”

Then he thought. “Wait, it’s colored clay. It’s Claymation!” There is in fact a story idea for this movie so far, and Feig said, “It’s the funniest – I just think it’s hilarious. Let’s just say it’s gonna be a big movie, big scope.”

So perhaps the Play-Doh movie could be a great comedy if it’s done right. There’s indeed a lot of directions you could take it, good and bad. And while a Claymation Play-Doh movie would be interesting, we’re willing to bet it will be done CGI, like every other animated film. Maybe Feig will even subvert expectations and make a down and dirty comedy with Play-Doh, much like Seth MacFarlane turned the adventures of a teddy bear into fowl mouthed hilarity.

Feig is doing Ghostbusters next for a 2016 release, so don’t expect the Play-Doh to hit the screen any time soon, but if it’s ready by 2018, we wouldn’t be surprised.
