Please No More Halloween Remakes

As a major horror film fan, I treated the news of Halloween getting yet another reboot with disgust. It’s inevitable that John Carpenter’s masterpiece would get remade yet again in the hopes of launching yet another major horror franchise, but please, enough is enough with this.

As the Hollywood Reporter tells us, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who’ve written some of the Saw movies (episodes IV to VII), as well as Piranha 3DD, are calling this “a recalibration,” not a reboot, whatever that means. There’s currently no director attached to the project, which is set up at Dimension Films.

I’ve said this many times before, I’ll say it again. Halloween has been ripped off and rebooted many times, but it will never be equaled. The basic story of Halloween is very bare bones, and it was John Carpenter’s directing style that raised it far above the usual horror fare of the time. Without a director with vision behind a Halloween movie, it’s just another horror movie with a guy running around killing people in a mask. The original’s still good enough, no need to remake it yet again, but you knew that.
